Thoughts about Cobra Kai

I have seen a few episodes of Corba Kai, the YouTube Premium series that shows where Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso ended up after the Karate Kid film series. It is actually good, I had doubts.

The series picks up with Johnny Lawrence still in the LA area but things are not going well for him. He has a crappy job, he lives in a run down apparent complex and his former rival (Daniel LaRusso) owns at least four car dealerships and has commercials. One day, Johnny helps a teenager who is jumped by a group of other teenagers and this inspires Johnny to open a karate dojo.

William Zabka is good as Johnny. He is relatable as a guy past his prime or a guy who has seen better days. Cobra Kai for him represents something great. I like the story even if the coincidences at the start are a bit much but it is a story, some of that is excusable.

I like an occasional musical number in a tv show

I like an occasional musical number in a TV show. I don’t think every show should have a musical number and maybe some shows are more suited to musical numbers then others.

The Magicians has done musical numbers for a while now. There was an acoustic rendition of Take on Me on the season 4 finale. Also I liked when the cast sang One Day More and one of the characters said “We had to skip a few verses. They’re great but they don’t apply to our situation.”

The Flash had a musical episode with Supergirl guest staring. That was fun. There were original songs and covers. I don’t think there have been any more musical numbers on the show since then.

Doom Patrol had a musical number by that show is in its first season, so it possible the series is still finding itself. (A lot of shows struggle in their first season.) It was fun.

Maybe I should watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which often features musical numbers. Racheal Bloom the star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend wrote at least one original song for the Flash musical episode. However the occasional musical numbers are partially fun for me because they are a change of pace.

Thoughts about the Magicians

The Magicians is based off a Sfyf series of novels by Levi Grossman.  Jason Ralph stars as Quintin Coldwater,  a mid twenty something year old man who discovers that magic is real and enrolls in a school for magic. The plot develops from there and he gets involved in adventures with his fellow students.

I like the show. It is not perfect but at times it is pretty good. Jason Ralph played Quintin. The show is not just Quintin’s story but he was often the central character. He was the new student at the magic school (the entry point for the audience as it were.) The last episode of season 4 killed Quintin and Ralph has officially left the show.

Is the show a bit oversexed? At times it might have been. I think it calmed down after the first season.  The show started to do musical numbers and those have been fun or moving. The cast is good, and the magic and alternate worlds are fun. The show can also be grim.

The last season of Game of Thrones starts tonight

The last season of Game of Thrones starts tonight. There are supposed to be six episodes this season. I thought there would be more excitement about this last season. Maybe there is more excitement than I am sensing. Maybe I am not looking at the right websites.

Game of Thrones has been a big hit for HBO. It has been HBO’s signature show for the last several years. I am little surprised that a Fantasy show is so popular. West World is a hit but not as big a hit as Game of Thrones.

I never go into the show. I know people who have but somehow I never did even before canceling HBO.

There is a spin-off planned.

Cloak and Dagger returns this week

Freeform’s show Cloak and Dagger returns this week. The first season was good, even if it had a bit of a slow start. This show is inspired by Marvel comics. They have darkness and light related superpowers.

Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph star in this series. Holt has more TV experience than her costar. They are good. The show is set in New Orleans, which is a good choice. It isolates the pair from the Netflix Marvel shows which take place in New York.

The first season had 10 episodes. I think season 2 will also have 10 episodes. Maybe the show could work with 13 episode seasons.
